Therapy
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act despite it.” — Amelia Earhart
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” — Carl Rogers
You don’t control when the weather changes – but you are responsible for how you respond when it does. When visibility is low and the path forward isn’t clear, you can rely on proven systems for guided support to navigate the temporary situation.
Traditional therapy is the mental health equivalent of flying through instrument conditions (IFR). Despite the name, VFR Wellness can help you navigate mental health conditions when these situations arise. Through accurate diagnosis that is aware of the special considerations of an FAA medical, we can pinpoint the issue. After the focus is identified, you will receive evidence-based therapies personalized for your specific needs and goals. There is a path through any storm, and together we will get you to the other side.

How Preventive Counseling is different
Traditional Therapy
- Treatment begins with assessing for psychiatric conditions. Once a diagnosis is given, treatment focuses on its treatment.
- Uses evidence-based therapeutic techniques applied to the specific diagnoses identified.
- Focuses on managing and/or decreasing the psychiatric condition.
- Can move into preventative therapy if condition is in remission and agreed upon by client and provider.
Preventive Counseling:
- Treatment skips a diagnostic assessment and instead focuses on the whole picture and what matters to you!
- Uses evidence-based therapeutic techniques flexibly applied to your values and goals to increase general wellbeing
- Focuses on maintaining wellbeing and performance and avoidance of future issues.
- Can move into traditional therapy if agreed upon by client and provider.
Special consideration for Pilots and Controllers
As part of traditional therapy services, a diagnostic interview will be completed. You may be diagnosed with any psychiatric condition for which you meet criteria. This may have an impact on your FAA medical. Certain diagnoses may be less or more impactful than others. However, a diagnosis is made based on your symptom and not based on its impact on your medical certificate. If you are required or encouraged to seek therapy services for related to a diagnosed condition, traditional therapy is likely the service you will want to consider.
